In short
Four checks before you buy: dose against the researched level, a batch-specific third-party COA, a delivery format you understand, and cost per gram. Two claims should stop you outright: a promised year reduction, and any disease claim.
Ownership disclosure. This site is operated by the SDAI BioAge™ brand. SDAI BioAge™ is one of the products compared below. We have written the comparison to be useful anyway, including SDAI's own limitations, because a comparison that only flatters its owner is worth nothing to you and you would spot it in a minute. Verify specifications against current product labels before buying anything, including ours.
Check one: dose against the research
Start here, because it eliminates the most products fastest. The commercial product involved in the most-cited human analysis was taken at roughly one gram of calcium AKG per day.
Work out the actual Ca-AKG per daily serve, not per capsule and not the total capsule weight. A product supplying a few hundred milligrams per day is a substantially different proposition from one at the researched level, however it is positioned.
Watch for two specific label patterns. First, proprietary blends that list a total blend weight without breaking out the Ca-AKG. Second, a serving size of several capsules, where the headline per-capsule figure understates what you actually have to swallow, and the real cost per day is several times what the shelf price suggests.
Check two: third-party verification
Purity claims are the easiest thing in this industry to print and the least often documented. What to ask for:
- A batch-specific certificate of analysis from an independent laboratory, matching the lot number on the bottle you receive. Not a generic COA and not a specification sheet.
- Heavy metal and contaminant testing. Standard for any mineral salt supplement.
- Identity and assay confirmation verifying the compound is what the label says at the quantity stated.
- Certified manufacturing. GMP certification is a floor rather than a differentiator, but its absence should end the conversation.
A brand that cannot produce a batch COA on request is asking you to take purity on faith. Plenty of brands in this category will supply one within a day.
Check three: delivery format
AKG clears quickly, so this is one of the few places where formulation genuinely differs rather than just sounding different.
| Format | The argument for it | The honest counterpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Standard immediate release | Cheapest per gram; the molecule is identical | Short plasma window, and mild GI effects are more commonly reported |
| Sustained release | Longer availability window, better suited to a cofactor role; gentler on the stomach | Costs more; ask for the dissolution profile rather than accepting the claim |
| Enteric coated | Avoids gastric release | Solves the irritation problem, not necessarily the duration problem |
The full reasoning is in the sustained-release explainer, including why a better release profile is a formulation result rather than an efficacy result.
Check four: cost per gram
Compute cost per gram of Ca-AKG delivered, after shipping and any import charges. Bottle price and capsule count are both misleading because serving sizes vary widely across the category. Once you standardise, the spread between budget and premium is usually smaller than it appears, and occasionally larger.
Claims that should stop you
A promised reduction in years. No supplement can support a predicted individual outcome. The figures circulating in this category come from a small uncontrolled study or from observational association research, and neither design supports a dosing prediction for you.
Any disease claim. A dietary supplement presented as preventing, treating or curing a condition is making a claim it is not permitted to make in Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the United States and most other jurisdictions. Its presence tells you something about the brand's compliance discipline generally.
Reasonable expectations
If you decide to buy, set expectations that match the evidence. The honest position is that AKG is an early-stage candidate with a coherent mechanism, good animal data and thin human data. Subjective changes people report in the first weeks are not measurable biological age change. The only way to know whether anything shifted is to measure before and after, and even then a single methylation reading carries more noise than most providers disclose.
Before spending, it is worth running the biological age estimator to see where your largest gains actually sit. For most people they are not in a bottle.
Common questions
How much calcium AKG per day?
The most-cited human analysis involved a product taken at roughly one gram per day. Follow the directions on the product you choose, and speak to a healthcare professional first if you take prescription medication or manage a health condition.
When should I take AKG?
Product directions vary. Taking it with food is commonly suggested to reduce the mild gastrointestinal effects some people report initially. Follow the specific product's instructions.
How do I get a certificate of analysis?
Email the brand and ask for the batch-specific COA matching the lot number on your bottle. Reputable manufacturers supply these routinely. A refusal or a generic specification sheet in place of a real COA is informative in itself.
Are budget AKG supplements worth it?
They deliver the same molecule. Given that the human evidence for the category is early stage, minimising spend is a defensible position. The trade-offs are delivery format and how readily testing documentation is available.
